ABOUT ME

Who exactly is Joe Lin?  I’m a marketing technology executive with over 17 years of experience in the technology field.  Over my career I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work in the technology, internet, telecommunications, philanthropic, publishing and manufacturing industries.  I’m also fortunate to have served in a variety of functions ranging from technology to sales.  As a leader I am an unique combination of creative vision, technology experience and business acumen.  What sets me apart has been my passion for my work.  Of course, it’s hard not to be excited about marketing technology.  There is no feeling like connecting people to solutions for real problems.

Previously, I was the Director of Web & Digital Media at Pall Corporation, a Danaher company. In this role I was charged with improving Pall Corporation’s web & digital presence globally. Since Pall Corporation does not have a Chief Marketing Officer, I worked collaboratively with our nine business units. I was responsible for setting the strategy for how we leverage digital technology for revenue generation (directly and indirectly). My accountabilities included social media, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, translations, search engine optimization (SEO), website development and mobile app development. You can find out more about my career on my LinkedIn profile.

PASSION

Merriam-Webster describes passion as “an intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction.” If there is one word that starts to describe me as person, this is it. In my work, it means an obsessive commitment to taking the actions that create a sustainable difference. As a leader, who I am and what I stand for is an overwhelming excitement and energy in my vision.

As a digital technologist, I am inspired by the opportunity to create connections between people and organizations. The opportunity of the digital platform is that it can transform how we are connected. Not just simply in our online experiences, but in the way that we interact everyday.

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do„
– Steve Jobs

CREATIVITY

I first started drawing when I was five years old. It was a hot summer day in Taiwan. “Son, come over here. I want to show you something,” my mother called. As I set down next to her, she pointed to a newspaper sitting on the table. “What is that?” she asked. There in front of me was my name, “林崇漢,” printed in the newspaper. It turned out I shared my name with a famous newspaper artist in Taiwan. The arts became a part of my life from that day forward.

Today, creativity continues to be a big part of who I am. Instead of drawing beautiful scenery, I apply my creative mindset to innovate solutions around business challenges. Just like a well constructed painting, technology architecture requires understanding of composition and how different pieces come together to create a beautiful whole. Digital marketing offers a unique space where my creativity can be combined with business and technology in an exciting way.

“Creativity is a drug I cannot live without„
– Cecile B. DeMille

STRATEGY

Having immigrated to the United States at a young age gives me a unique perspective in the business world. What I bring to any work environment is a multi-cultural perspective. Because of my upbringing, I combine the longer-term perspectives of the Asian community with the rapid shorter-term objectives of Western culture. As a leader, this duality allows me to have unique and innovative insights.

Not only are my cultural backgrounds unique tools to my success, but the focus of my education allows me to be a conduit between business and technology. My engineering training granted me analytical skills that are a staple in any successful endeavour. At the same time, my education in business means I’m always keeping an eye on the bottomline goals, the endgame.

“Strategy is about making choices, trade-offs; it’s about deliberately choosing to be different„
– Michael Porter

EDUCATION

NYU Stern School of BusinessI’m a graduate of the New York University Stern School of Business. From 2006-2010 I participated in the Langone Part-Time program, where I focused on Strategy, Change Management and Law & Business. I chose to focus on these areas to complement my existing experience in technology management.

My education at Stern was not just about classroom work. I also focused on leadership development by organizing the annual Langone retreat. In organizing the Langone retreat, I utilized my networking ability to source speakers and my negotiation and influence skills to organize the retreat staff.

UM School of EngineeringMy undergraduate studies were in Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan. I chose the Computer Engineering program because it offered a unique challenge. Exiting high school, I had already done significant work in software programming. I considered myself proficient in programming and felt that studies in hardware engineering were needed to both challenge myself as well as complement my existing knowledge.

My undergraduate experience was not simply about the education. It was also about pushing my own limits while leveraging my existing abilities. It was this desire that drove me to participate in medical research at the University of Michigan hospital that resulted in a research publication. It also led me to two stints with IBM and working on a library digitization project.
