Imagination Gallery

Art and other creative endeavors have always had a special place in my heart. As a youth in Taiwan it was mission to become like the artist that shared my name, 林崇漢. In grade school art was a source of accomplishment. It was how I could stand out from the pack. In high school it was an outlet for my self-expression. Creativity was allowed me to express my inner turmoil and celebrate my joys.

The Imagination Gallery is a place where I can share my creativity, both past and present, with you. This is display of my imagination at work. You will see how I’ve changed over time through my artwork, poetry and other creative works. It is my hope that it will bring you joy and a sense of connection. Thank you for allowing me to share this with you.

POETRY

I first started using poetry as a form of expression in high school. I’m not quite sure why it took me so long to utilize poetry as a form of self expression. Once I started, however, it simply just started flowing out of me. It became my companion through the turmoils of growing up as a teenager. It’s carried me through heart-break, heart-ache and sorrows. There were days of whimsical childish expression, but other times deep philosophical internal debate.

Over the years, I’ve met many people who meditate as a way of coping with life. Looking back, I realized that writing poetry was my meditation. Nothing was off limits. There were no rules. I simply had to express myself in words. And as I wrote, I felt a beat as if I was connected to the universe. Please enjoy and I hope that you find an expression of yourself through my work.

He Lifted Me Up

January 4, 1998

In the turmoil of what were my goals and dreams, I suddenly felt an emptiness so all consuming. The darkness had made me a prisoner, or so it seems, never to see an innocent child’s eyes once gleaming. From the depth of my own misery and despair, He lifted me… Read more

MUSIC

I’m not a gifted musician. Although I did play the violin in high school and have occasionally participated in a church choir, I shouldn’t be relied upon to carry a tune. I do, however, enjoy music. Especially if there is dancing involved.

Back to the point. Back in 1997, while at the University of Michigan, a friend of mine from the Chinese Christian Fellowship asked me to write some lyrics for me. At the time we were both living at a Church in Ann Arbor. Yes, you read that right. We live in a church. He had read some of my poems and really wanted to collaborate on putting together some songs that could be performed at the student fellowship group.

There’s really not a lot of them in the portfolio, but I hope you enjoy them. Who knows, maybe I’ll team up with someone with musical talent again to write more songs.

PHOTOGRAPHY

There’s a certain power to beautiful images. It’s not just the beauty that captivates you, but the fact that each image represents a memory captured. There in the photograph is a moment in time captured to be shared.

Since taking on photography I’ve developed a new appreciation for the amazingness of the world that surrounds us. Even the smallest details captured in macro strike me with awe. The best part is that I can go back and relive those moments when I first observed them.
